Approaching the Ancestors

Wednesday is the birthday of my paternal grandfather
Born in 1909, I have no memory of him as he died of cancer when my father was in high school.

To say he had a problematic life would be an understatement from the bits and pieces I have been able to pull from my father and other family members.

He was a brilliant man with two engineering degrees. But addictions shortened his life and were the source of incredible hardship and trauma for his family.

And because of this, I have been hesitant to reach out and include him in my ancestral practice. But.

He has been on my mind so much lately and little synchronicities have been popping up leading me to explore the possibility of checking in with him (and my well ancestors) to see if it is in everyone’s best interests to explore the path of healing for this line. Because similar problems continue to manifest in subsequent generations.

I put together a three card spread to test the waters, so to speak.

The response pulls are below.

I had already asked my mother to send me a photo of him and that if nothing else I was planning on going to a church and lighting a candle for him.

I’d say the messages from the cards concur with my plans. 🕯

His current state • 8 of Wands
He has messages. And a lot of them. I’m also sensing an urgency in the request(s).

Should I engage • Princess of Cups. This is a clear yes. The young girl even looks like me in my youth. I’m drawn to the image of the turtle in the cup as an offering. Putting a pin in this to explore further.

How to help• 4 of Wands
The imagery is of a church. I don’t think it could be any clearer that I was on track with my original initial plan.

I will be headed to a local cathedral tomorrow and will see what other messages come through.

Prayer Circles

🧡Prayer Circles 🤍

I have repurposed that “concept” in the creation and use of my own beads for different purposes in my daily practice.

Several years ago I crocheted a necklace for prayers to Brigid using black thread and beads I purchased in Italy years ago. An old locket holds an image of her inside.

The chakra beads are used to state my affirmations for each chakra each day.

The rosary was a thrift store find. I loved the center medallion of Mary and is a way for me to connect with my ancestors and the divine feminine. It was missing the cross which was fine by me because I worked in my own purchase (also from that trip to Italy) and I love the juxtaposition.

Do you use prayer beads in your practice?

Alternative Ancestral Offerings

My post yesterday got me thinking about different types of offerings other than the standard food, drink, candles, etc.

Some of these I already do, some of them are planned for the upcoming year and beyond.

I got to thinking that our ancestors had/have different love languages languages. And while food and drink and warmth and nice smelling things are always appreciated, maybe there would be other ways to bond with them

Like music for example. My grandmothers were young girls during the jazz age and Mothers during WW2. So I’ve pulled up Spotify and found playlists from those times that I will play when I spend time at my altar/desk

Handmade gifts that are a reflection of my own talents, like writing haikus and making origami stars to place by their photographs have been a daily addition these last few months

What I’m really ready to explore are acts of service and donations that speak specifically to how they lived their lives. One was the first female in her family to receive a college degree and was a first grade teacher for 40 years. Finding a way to donate to current young teachers who need classroom support in the form of time or supplies comes instantly to mind. There were also times of food insecurity, so donations to community food banks seems very appropriate.

And then of course, there is the ultimate gift. Your time. Your presence. Just spending 5 minutes at the start and close of my day to sit down with them. And take a deep breath. Say I love you. And thank you. What my plans are. How the day went. And then pausing and listening. I can’t begin to tell you how deeply this has impacted every aspect of my life in the past few years.

Those are just a few of my musings.
What kind of alternate love language offerings to your beloved dead appeal to you?

Love Letters to my Ancestors

💙More love letters and offerings🤍

A very generous share from @erika.buenaflor_curandera
(See second slide) inspired me to drizzle essential oils over the note and add their herbal forms before placing on my ancestor altar.

While the large family communal altar may be down until next October, my smaller one that I have been tending daily for several years will always be the focal point of my spiritual practice.

Soul Food

Soul Cakes with Dark Cherries

❤️Soul Food

Food is one of my primary love languages and I try to speak it daily to the people in my life.

I made these offerings, some with dark cherries, some plain to have with tea on All Souls Day.

And one was also placed on the Ancestral altar for this Season of remembrance. I work with the energy of Samhain until the next cross quarter day, Imbolc. So I feel no pressure to cram everything into a day or a week. 💜

I’ll post the recipe to my website later this week. I’m still tweaking it

Page of Prompts

So my guide for this month’s ancestral work is embodied by the Page Of Swords. My passionate, enthusiastic, brimming with new ideas, communication idea generator 💙

Using the Ancestral Tarot book by @nancysageshadow I next queried how to best work together with this guide

And the 6 of Pentacles, 5 of Wands and King of Pentacles stepped forward with some very practical and encouraging advice

One of the things I decided to do this month with my daily prompts was to write them on slips of paper and place them in a jar. When I do my daily tarot draws, I also pull a slip of paper to see what ideas or support pop up.

I write them down in my daily devotional journal and then fold the strip into a “lucky star” and pop them back into the jar holding the strips.

There are a lot of tutorials on YouTube on how to fold a Lucky Star. The link below was the most clear!

I also included a screen shot of his account for ease in finding him if you want to try this yourself.

I’m not sure what I’ll do with all the stars at the end of the month, but I have a feeling the Page will prompt me!

Happy Saturday and bright blessings

I used three of the prompts from my November offerings list : Shadow, Liminal and Mystery and combined them to fill in a 7 line prompt from @k8belew to come up with this offering for my ancestors. 🤍

The Title: Shadows, Veils
Line 1: “Listening ” Line 2: “Being _____
Line 3: “A candle in _
Line 4: In this line speak about the veil
Line 5:”I danced _

Line 6: “Off “
Line 7: “I know _

It was placed on their altar on Samhain where it will stay until tomorrow when I will be burned and released with the rest of the ancestral table offerings into our family bonfire.
